Evergreen Cemetery
Evergreen Memorial Cemetery is considered Bloomington's oldest and largest cemetery. The most famous person buried here was born a generation after Lincoln's assassination. Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-1965) Illinois Governor, twice Democratic candidate for president (1952 & 1956), and United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Lincoln, though, did know Stevenson's grandfather, Adlai E. Stevenson I, who was vice president of the United States from 1893-1897. Many of Lincoln's friends and legal and political associates are buried here, including David Davis, Jesse Fell, and Asahel Gridley. Lincoln also attended at least one funeral here. On April 14, 1859, he was part of the funeral procession for the Angeline Strode Turner Lamon, the wife of Ward Hill Lamon. Also buried here is LT. Col. William McCullough. When McCullough was killed in action December 5, 1862 during an engagement in Coffeeville, Mississippi, Lincoln penned a moving letter to McCullough's daughter, Fanny.
