National Hotel Site

The National Hotel was lost in an 1855 fire. Bloomington contractor S. D. Rounds built the buildings standing today in 1857. The National Hotel was a popular stop for lawyers of the Eighth Judicial Circuit, including Lincoln. John W. Ewing, the hotel's proprietor from 1844-1846 was a Democrat, though he maintained a close friendship with Lincoln, who was a statewide leader of the Whig Party.
